Connection between Prague Castle and the city's Old Town
The replacement for the damaged Judith Bridge, Prague's oldest bridge was built between 1357 and 1402 under the guidance of Charles IV. Originally known as Stone Bridge or Prague Bridge, it was renamed Charles Bridge in 1870. Constructed of sandstone blocks, the bridge is adorned with fortified towers at each end - the Lesser Town Bridge Towers and the Old Town Bridge Tower. Between 1683 and 1928, the bridge was embellished with 30 statues of saints, including the renowned statue of St. John of Nepomuk.
